Quote of the day......

there is need to emphasize the truism that a government can spend or invest only what it takes away from its citizens and that its additional spending and investment curtails the citizens' spending and investment to the full extent of its quantity. (Human Action, p. 737)

The monetary policy rally.....

The stock market may hit new lows this year or the next as the current rally has been largely caused by the money printed by central banks and fundamental problems remain unsolved, legendary investor Jim Rogers told CNBC Wednesday.

His views echo those of renowned bear Marc Faber, who told CNBC last week that the rises in share prices did not mean the world was embarking on a path of sustainable economic growth.

"I'm not buying shares if that's what you mean. Not at all," Rogers told "Squawk Box Asia."

"The bottom will probably come later this year, next year, who knows when," he added.

Governments have not solved the essential problems that caused the crisis but instead they "flooded the world with money," according to Rogers. Trying to solve the problem of too much consumption and too much debt with more consumption "defies belief" and will not work, he said.
From here. Jim Rogers is not my favorite, I think that he is a blowhard. He yaps constantly about this and that but in this case, I think that he is onto something and this something is something that I have been very worried about.

I think that this market rally is more of monetary phenomenon than one based on fundamental turnaround of the economy. The market place is completely awash in liquidity that has been purposely pumped into the system. Some of this is finding its way into financial investments and is temporarily inflating some asset values. And it not just the US, since many global markets have been improving. The US is part of a global economy where everyone has been suffering. Economic declines as indicated by GDP declines and rising unemployment in many places where these falls have been even more severe in Korea, Japan, most sclerotic European economies and even vibrant Hong Kong.

The idea that the central government can borrow itself to national prosperity is opium for the masses and one that only delays the day of reckoning. Either the Fed withdraws the excess liquidity from the system leading to much higher interest rates now or it allows inflation to raise asset prices but with the inevitable increase, usually much higher, of interest rates in the future.

The big problem with the idea that a nation can tolerate a little inflation is that it is an insidious tax on people. It taxes wealth and it taxes value. It raises discount rates and lowers the value of future cash flow. Normal investment horizons shorten and money, on the margin, becomes fast money, seeking short-term profits at the expense of long-term investments. Inflation does not exist with out corresponding costs that cancel out any perceived 'benefit'.

And generally, the idea of a 'little inflation' is not one that will fool everyone. The currency will depreciate raising all import prices and lowering standards of living till finally the Fed is forced to do what it is supposed to do and that is to promote price stability.

There is no easy way out, and this one will be especially painful since the people in Washington are probably the most incapable people to ever be elected to office. Additionally, Americans are believing that government can solve these problems, when in-fact, government is complicit in creating these problems. Good luck, USA, you are in for a very very difficult time.

A rightwing extremist an proud of it!!!!

The DHS (department of homeland security)recently published a report that
“Rightwing” extremists are, among other things, “mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”
Oh my gawd, this is amazing. It is unimaginable that someone may not be part of the indoctrinated many and are not infatuated with the idea or concept of central government control over increasing swaths of American life.

So if it is a rightwing extremist that I am, then I think that I am in good company....

And these guys.....

All of those early Americans must have been rightwing extremists then! Too bad that we have seem to have forgotten the wisdom offered by these people.

Change that no one should believe in.....

America is coasting right now on the strength of genuine past victories and of the seemingly inexhaustible resources produced by a longtime mix of democracy and free markets. Lamentations and financial woes notwithstanding, most Americans still live cocooned in enough comforts so that it's easy to forget just how rough the world can get. If America won't lead the way, lay down the rules and proudly defend them, big change is indeed on its way. It won't be the change we seek.
From here. The nation has had it easy for decades thanks to the formula that allows citizens the liberty to choose a path to success and also the freedom to fail. Now, under the Obamessiah, people are being promised that they never have to worry since the state will complete the cradle-to-grave social safety net. So why even work at it? All things will be paid for by the faceless 'rich' and one will never have to worry since you will have a nanny in Washington looking out for your well being. Its just stupid.

Economic issues are one facet of the problem that I address below. However, this inward focused pillowing of American life also has consequences for liberty around the world and external threats to both American life and the health and safety to the billions of others that are not Americans. The past several decades has seen hundreds of millions rise out of poverty and living healthier lives. This has been a direct result of American Liberty and its capacity to lead with both right and might.

However, the nihilistic Democrats that consider the destruction of time honored traditions of American values centered on individual liberty, families, communities and a faith in God as a virtue and usurping these traditional values by creating a reliance and a nebulous god-like faith in the state that promises a riskless life based on the creature comforts delivered by the 'golden calf' state.

Good luck with this. It will never happen as the Soviet Union, 1960's China and North Korea showed us and it is juvenile to think that these socialist goals are achievable or even desirable. The problem with achieving this lofty but Godless goal is the law of unintended consequences will definitively foil these plans. The unintended consequence is that under a hostile tax regime and a central government that has foisted the conflict flag of class warfare, Washington will fail miserably on delivering even on what they have promised to deliver in the past.

These grandiose plans require copious amounts of cash and who wants to lend money to entity that is irresponsibly distributing income to people that do not deserve it? They will lend if they think that it is a good investment. They will not if they do not think that it is a good idea. This will be determined but increasing the amount of funds borrowed from others seems somewhat unlikely that there are not unlimited funds available from this source.

So the other choice is to coercively tax one's own citizens to meet these goals. So if it is taxes that are the only option, then either the nation wants to redistribute income that will create large numbers of winners and losers in this system or if there are not a large number of winners and losers THEN WHY EVEN BOTHER TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS? Is this really what we want?

We must recognize that a process that creates big numbers of winners and big numbers of losers that the losers may not be so passive in being the losers. They will probably change their behavior to reduce their losses or go Galt and decide not to participate. And then for those that argue that it all balances out in the end, then why bother going through this cathartic process and injecting government into normal transactions if the exercise has no effect?

Some hope for the USA....

A Gallup Poll released Friday found that 51 percent of Americans now call themselves pro-life rather than pro-choice on the issue of abortion, the first time a majority gave that answer in the 15 years that Gallup has asked the question.

The findings, obtained in an annual survey on values and beliefs conducted May 7-10, marked a significant shift from a year ago. A year ago, 50 percent said they were pro-choice and 44 percent pro-life — in the new poll, 42 percent said they were pro-choice.
Real values are starting to overcome the paper thin sclerotic Euro values that the country appeared to be moving towards as embodied by the starry eyed behavior towards the 'golden calf' Obamessiah. Hopefully, people are finally realizing that the nation is not one that lacks backbone or one that should have its backbone eviscerated like the campaigner-in-chief seems to want to do, but has real values, those rights and responsibilities that flow from God. If one wants to live in the valueless dreary cloud of European life, one can move there and live those values. God save us from the evil in Washington and cleanse the minds of those that have lost their way.

This joke was nominated for best joke of the year.....

A Russian arrives in New York City as a new immigrant to the United States . He stops the first person he sees walking down the street and says, "Thank you Mr. American for letting me into this country, giving me housing, food stamps, free medical care, and a free education!"

The passerby says, "You are mistaken, I am a Mexican."

The man goes on and encounters another passerby. "Thank you for having such a beautiful country here in America ."

The person says, "I not American, I Vietnamese."

The new arrival walks farther, and the next person he sees he stops, shakes his hand, and says, "Thank you for wonderful America !"

That person puts up his hand and says, "I am from Middle East . I am not American."

He finally sees a nice lady and asks, "Are you an American?"

She says, "No, I am from Africa ."

Puzzled, he asks her, "Where are all the Americans?"

The African lady checks her watch and says, "Probably at work."

Burying the nation...

Passage of the day....

In most of the developed world, the state has gradually annexed all the responsibilities of adulthood—health care, child care, care of the elderly—to the point where it's effectively severed its citizens from humanity's primal instincts, not least the survival instinct. Hillary Rodham Clinton said it takes a village to raise a child. It's supposedly an African proverb—there is no record of anyone in Africa ever using this proverb, but let that pass. P.J. O'Rourke summed up that book superbly: It takes a village to raise a child. The government is the village, and you're the child.
From this Mark Steyn piece.

As Steyn argues, and as Machiavelli understood, sloth, laziness and seeking painless living, is a dark enemy of a republic and leads to the sclerotic rotting away of personal freedoms. I do not look forward to what becomes of the recent jolting movements towards encompassing socialism that will result, in my humble opinion, in an eventual gutting of personal freedoms as created to the American founding fathers and codified in the American Constitution.

And as far as the claimed African proverb, it may take a village to raise a child, but it does not take a Federal Government to do so. But as it works today, it takes a village to raise a child and it takes that child to economically support that village's profligacy and indolence.

Understanding outsourcing.....

More American Workers Outsourcing Own Jobs Overseas

Passage of the day....

Then there’s national health care, an issue that reveals how boundless the progressive capacity is for both government expansion and self-delusion. The idea that the government could successfully manage the U.S. health care industry (which makes up 15% of the economy) and issue directives and payments to millions of health care providers while improving health outcomes, protecting patient rights, and reducing costs, belongs in books with fairy tales and unicorns.
From here. People are completely delusional if one thinks that government is even remotely capable of providing healthcare that meets the above simple tests. This rush towards collectivism and the failed socialist policies of the 20th century is a catastrophe for all that are caught in its claws.

This is the guy that should have become President....

Not the doofus that we have now.

The Dept. Of Defense briefed the president this morning....

They told President Obama that 2 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq .

To everyone's surprise, all the color drained from Obama's face. Then he collapsed onto his desk, head in his hands, visibly shaken, almost in tears.

Finally, he composed himself and asked, 'Just how many is a brazilian?'

Explains the budget, doesn't it? The debt that the Obamessiah will create will be brazilions. And we will get less than nothing for all of the effort. Healthcare will be worse, most people will lose their retirement income and government will be control almost every aspect of American lives. I do not look forward to pain coming our way. We have gone past the point of no return and now are blindly following a complete empty suit and naive world view.

Subject: $50 is $50......

Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Morris would say, 'Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter.' Esther always replied, 'I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars'

One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, 'Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.' To this, Esther replied, 'Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars.'

The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's fifty dollars'

Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, 'By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!'

Morris replied, 'Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know, fifty dollars is fifty dollars!'

Passage of the day....

Bremmer says, correctly, that state capitalism "has introduced massive inefficiencies into global markets and injected populist politics into economic decision-making," that "deeper state intervention in an economy means that bureaucratic waste, inefficiency and corruption are more likely to hold back growth," and that politicians tend to develop stimulus packages with their constituencies, not economic efficiencies, in mind. Therefore, he says, the state must eventually retreat. He probably is wrong because he underestimates the pleasure politicians derive from using their nation's wealth as a slush fund for purchasing political advantage.
From this George Will piece.

Of course, American socialists (AKA Democrats) wrap all of this intervention in the gauze of fairness, justice, and all kinds of subjective garbage. However, one fact of life is continuously overlooked, and that is that the singular decisions that are made by governments are made by people that are subject to all kinds of interference and influence; people want to get their hands on a piece of that big pie. So, why should we trust them? Why should we give away our ability to make decisions and hand them to some faceless bureaucrat is Washington? Its a complete mystery to me, its dangerous and is not American. The USA is fast becoming just another sclerotic European state.

Some people's favorite soup........

Colin Powell has morphed into nothing more than just another leftist d**khead.....

"The Republican Party is in deep trouble," Powell told corporate security executives at a conference in Washington sponsored by Fortify Software Inc. The party must realize that the country has changed, he said. "Americans do want to pay taxes for services," he said. "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."
Here. So let me get this right. Government is providing what services? Are they the most effective or efficient service providers? I seriously doubt that this can reasonably be supported. Or are they promising services and arguing that people do not have to pay for them, that faceless "wealthy" people will pay for them? This is just another argument to layer on more debilitating middle-class handouts.

Some argue that over time it all works out so that those that pay get some benefit later and that their payment benefits someone today. If this is the case, that it is all a wash over time, then why do all of this silly taxation and delivery of services at all? Wouldn't it be better that instead of paying taxes for these services that we pay for the services ourselves directly? Spineless Democrats and d**kheads like Colin Powell and his mamby pamby centrist gobbly gook can just go screw themselves. I would prefer to be in deep trouble and stand on principle than to socialize the nation to regain power. Why have power in nation that is worthless and stands for nothing?

Furthermore, Colin 'the d**khead" Powell, also argued that some people like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter should shutup...
He blasted radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, saying he does not believe that Limbaugh or conservative icon Ann Coulter serve the party well. He said the party lacks a "positive" spokesperson. "I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without," Powell said.
Well, well, well. So the shrill left during the previous administration was not coarse? Remember Bush the chimp? CdhP, there is a big tent party that has sucked up to blacks for decades and that is the Democrats. If conservatives and the not-so-conservative Republican party are not left enough, then go to the Democrats. You can get handouts continuously there as long as the nation can continue to borrow money or tax the bejezzus out of people.

I will never move left just to meet the populace's desire for more and more handouts, now defined as 'services'. What I think that what I will do is just move out completely. Why be an American if it does not include the ideals and the time tested methods that made the country great?

In the Federalist Papers written nearly 250 years ago, Madison writes on Federal government intervention....

Basically, Madison warns (FP #44) of the slippery slope of government intervention in contracts and private property rights where arguments of a simple 'needed' abrogation of some contracts naturally leads to arguments for further intervention...
Bills of attainder, ex-post-facto laws, and laws impairing the obligation of contracts, are contrary to the first principles of the social compact, and to every principle of sound legislation. The two former are expressly prohibited by the declarations prefixed to some of the State constitutions, and all of them are prohibited by the spirit and scope of these fundamental charters. Our own experience has taught us, nevertheless, that additional fences against these dangers ought not to be omitted. Very properly, therefore, have the convention added this constitutional bulwark in favor of personal security and private rights; and I am much deceived if they have not, in so doing, as faithfully consulted the genuine sentiments as the undoubted interests of their constituents. The sober people of America are weary of the fluctuating policy which has directed the public councils. They have seen with regret and indignation that sudden changes and legislative interferences, in cases affecting personal rights, become jobs in the hands of enterprising and influential speculators, and snares to the more-industrious and less informed part of the community. They have seen, too, that one legislative interference is but the first link of a long chain of repetitions, every subsequent interference being naturally produced by the effects of the preceding. They very rightly infer, therefore, that some thorough reform is wanting, which will banish speculations on public measures, inspire a general prudence and industry, and give a regular course to the business of society.
Madison argues that once the door of intervention in private contracts is cracked open, that eventually the gates will be flung wide open. This is evident to me as those that benefit from intervention will argue using the new precedents from the original interference to further degrade contracts and the rights to private property. Its a slippery slope to serfdom.

The interference of the Federal government for the 'better good' whether it is truly believed to be good intentioned or not, will inevitably lead to degradation of the original principles of liberty. 70 years ago, due to the catastrophe of the depression, Americans were convinced that intervention by the Federal Government was important and necessary to lead the nation out of the economic problems facing them at that time. However, this intervention was clearly in contravention to the original intent of American experiment in Liberty. But it was expedient. This is the time that door was flung wide open to allow Federal intervention at an increasing level. And the leviathan is using the broad definition of constitutional powers as offered in the Commerce Clause to eviscerate all other liberties....
The Commerce Clause represents one of the most fundamental powers delegated to the Congress by the founders. The outer limits of the Commerce Clause power has been the subject of long, intense political controversy. Interpretation of the sixteen words of the Commerce Clause has helped define the balance of power between the federal government and the states and the balance of power between the two elected branches of the Federal government and the Judiciary. As such, it has a direct impact on the lives of American citizens.
Use of the commerce clause in the Constitution, just 16 simple words that allowed Congress to regulate economic activity....
To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes;
has allowed Congress and the Federal Government to do almost anything including dunning wages and redistributing them to others through such idiotic Ponzi scheme programs as Social Security and Medicare, has allowed the Federal Government to poorly and ineffectively regulate financial institutions that has probably created more systemic risk and not less, has crammed unfunded Federal mandates on states that will eventually become unmanageable, has created thousand of other redistribution programs, has allocated resources to housing and away from other competing investments through creating agencies that guarantee these loans and have created tax breaks for these same investments... and the list just goes on and on ad nauseum.

Each of these formerly 'essential' interventions has in aggregate also created a massive debt and unfunded obligations that will prove impossible to meet and repay. As more and more resources are diverted from other uses, to those as determined by government bureaucrats, that the people that earned and saved should have the right to use as they see fit, the sclerotic Euro-like state that the US is becoming will have to continue to take these resources and in process reduce the liberty of its citizens in order to continue to redistribute the wealth. The reduction of liberty will come in the form of ever increasing taxes therefore decreasing the individual's personal benefits to the time that they expend in their occupations and work, through the taxing of wealth through inflation as these Federal debts will have less and less value relative to productive enterprises, the recent talk of implementing mandatory public service, through the intervention of public discourse and editorializing as found on TV, radio and other forms of media as government sees it fit to regulate free speech under the disguise of the newspeak named 'Fairness Doctrine' and a plethora of other interventions that will reduce the liberties of the people for the 'greater good.'

The nation is on a slippery slope of serfdom, where Washington will be the emperor and all others will be serfs to that leviathan. Watch out. At least my children will have a choice to not be subject to the dead weight of the coming miserable American life since they will have the choice of being citizens of other nations. The US will HAVE to constrict the liberties of its citizens due to its need to control so many aspects of American life. I am already trapped by the Leviathan but my children are not. They will be able to decide for themselves if it worthwhile to join a dying nation where they will become responsible for unbelievable financial obligations or they will be able to choose a life in a nation that has brighter prospects.

A unique approach for the government to raise funds....

The money addicted federal government will have a very difficult time raising funds to meet its greatly expanded socialist agenda. Below is a unique partial solution to meet some of the shortfall.

Greed is good, Gordon Gecko's famous speech....

Quote fo the day....

I don't believe in a law to prevent a man from getting rich; it would do more harm than good. So while we do not propose any war upon capital, we do wish to allow the humblest man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else.

-Abraham Lincoln-
This is the late Jack Kemp's favorite quote on entrepreneurial capitalism. Jack Kemp, an adherent of Ronald Reagan's low tax, supply side capital model, died this weekend and a number of pieces written by him over the past couple of decades can be read here.

Jack was also a believer in the gold standard, a interesting idea but unfortunately arcane since it does not allow for global growth that have raised 100's of millions out of poverty. The wild boom in the US over the past 30 years has allowed other economies to grow. Now the US, that has lived beyond it's means, will have to retrench. Its now time for the rest of the world to create buoyancy. A gold standard would probably have not allowed this to happen.

Good to hear that it will only take 11 days to wipe Israel off the map...

Of course, Europe is worried but what the heck will those useless people do about it? Absolutely nothing. They will again look to the US to 'solve' this problem when it gets critical. They have been negotiating with Iran over its acquisition of nuclear weapons for a little less than a decade. And they have achieved nothing. Some define this as smart diplomacy, a tactic that the US is now expected to engage in.

So as Iran rattles its sword and threatens serious reprisals against Israel and by extension Europe. Enjoy the fireworks and when there is a war in the Middle East that ends up killing millions, then we will finally know what Iran is up to and the efficacy of smart diplomacy.

There is still hope.....

The hope does not reside in the personality and cult of the Obamessiah and his enchanted multitudes of worshipers that look forward to life of bliss under government run healthcare, risk-free living under transfer payments in retirement and a multitude of Utopian government programs but in the real people that work, save, create and invest in the future of the nation, their States, communities and families. The hope resides with the people that do not need government assistance, that do not seek out this benefit and these same people that know that they will not prosper in this kind of world....
There is a major cultural schism developing in America. But it's not over abortion, same-sex marriage or home schooling, as important as these issues are. The new divide centers on free enterprise -- the principle at the core of American culture.

Despite President Barack Obama's early personal popularity, we can see the beginnings of this schism in the "tea parties" that have sprung up around the country. In these grass-roots protests, hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans have joined together to make public their opposition to government deficits, unaccountable bureaucratic power, and a sense that the government is too willing to prop up those who engaged in corporate malfeasance and mortgage fraud.
From here.

So, can one argue that socialist nations been better at creating successfully societies as many Democrats think and support? Is North Korea a better place for its citizens? Was soviet Russia more successful? Does France create a more dynamic and successful society, maybe happier people or some other metric of success? Are governments more successful in allocating resources than thousands and millions of people making decisions based upon various factors and taking into account a multitude of information? Are people actually willing to give up their freedom in making decisions by allowing governments to make the singular decision that they are offering by intervening in markets? Are the recent tea parties an indicator that some people recognize that they are entering an area of existential risk?
Voices in the media, academia, and the government will dismiss this ethical populism as a fringe movement -- maybe even dangerous extremism. In truth, free markets, limited government, and entrepreneurship are still a majoritarian taste. In March 2009, the Pew Research Center asked people if we are better off "in a free market economy even though there may be severe ups and downs from time to time." Fully 70% agreed, versus 20% who disagreed.

Free enterprise is culturally mainstream, for the moment. Asked in a Rasmussen poll conducted this month to choose the better system between capitalism and socialism, 13% of respondents over 40 chose socialism. For those under 30, this percentage rose to 33%. (Republicans were 11 times more likely to prefer capitalism than socialism; Democrats were almost evenly split between the two systems.)
No surprise that Democrats wish socialism upon the people. It is particularly trooubling that young people have been indoctorinated into believing that the dead hand of socialism is preferable to creating wealth through economic freedom.

Liberals, Democrats and socialists think that they are such brilliant people that they know so much better what is good for you then you do. They are so bright and intelligent that they have incredible capacities to know nearly everything that is needed to be known to create the fairest most equitable economic system and will not be subject to any interests of business or other stakeholders except the people. Not! It is opium. This is something that I unfortunately had to endure with so many of my family and friends. So many drink the Koolaid of the heavy hand of socialism and I can no longer even talk to these clowns. I have decided to eliminate these people from my life. I just do not need the aggravation of listening to them whine and drone on. Its pointless to have relationships with these people since their thought process is so infected that they vilify you for thinking differently and that is wanting to live one life in a way that one chooses instead of their brilliant way of life. Good-bye.

Recreating the socialist Utopia of France......
